The Story

Nipponia is a Journey into Japanese culinary culture, an age-old tradition to be studied in depth to be inspired and guided as lulled by the waves of the sea while listening to the rustle of the wind. These are the feelings that inspire us to search for each ingredient, carefully chosen and presented to indulge the creativity of those who offer their talents to the art of cooking, an art made up of details, compositions of flavors, scents and textures.

Nipponia is a concept in the search for high-quality exotic ingredients, which began in 1985 under the name Orientaliment and with an eye always on the millennia-old cuisines of the Orient and those "simply good," healthy and precious ingredients that have always made unique flavors of dishes whose origins are blurred in the mists of human history.

The original idea for what would become the project and then the reality of Nipponia took shape from dusty old books about adventurous travel on sumptuous trains in the early 1900s, amid caviar, champagne and Art Nouveau art.

The Company's efforts immediately focused on a gastronomic archaeology operation, rediscovering prized ingredients and foods lost in the rubble of wars and the passage of time.

It was in pushing this quest to the borders of Asia that the Company brought back to business a magnificent source of production of "Caviar de Mandchourie," sturgeon caviar of the highest quality, caught in the Amur River in Manchuria, a top-quality product on par with its more renowned Russian and Iranian cousins. Later, wild Keta salmon caviar, the very rare golden sturgeon Sterlet and smoked Beluga were added. The catalog was joined by the finest smoked salmon from Scotland and Ireland to various types of foie gras and fine truffles.

With the transformation of the "Orientaliment" brand to "Gourmet Line," the Company turned its attention to delicacies more related to our Mediterranean tradition, beginning the artisanal production of mullet and tuna roe, to smoked swordfish, tuna and sea bass.

Since 2001 the company began visit Japan more and more , recognizing it as one of the countries in the world among the most similar to Italy in terms of the variety and richness of local cuisines, the refinement and sophistication of products, and the vast popular gastronomic culture.

In those years, sushi was an expensive elitist food and not very common in our territory; the few Japanese restaurants in Italy had difficulty sourcing good quality raw materials.

The products available were few and mostly from commercial brands and Chinese-sourced ingredients. The 'intuition was to devise the Nipponia brand and focus all efforts on the latter, importing the best high-quality ingredients from Japan, dedicated to the world of sushi and Japanese gastronomy. Before long, the sushi wave would sweep through Italy as well until it became the Company's core business.
